A tormenting love story is the plot of this novel, the background being the historical events that take place mostly in the Balcan region. The novel covers the crucial years of the II World War and the coming , in post-war Romania, of a socialist regime linked to the Soviet bloc. At a ball in the home to the Brancoviano family, in Bucarest still sparkling of Parisian Belle Epoque, the secretary of the prince a young Italian man,Achil by name falls in love with a mysterious bourgeois girl. Niza Horj is deeply rooted in the socio-cultural traditions of the Transylvanian people. They love each other tenderly and passionately. The historical events that rage over Europe drive their newly blossomed love apart. Achil is called to arms and leaves for the Russian Campaign, while Niza remains in Bucarest to finish her studies of medicine and start her profession. Niza and Achil remain strongly faithful to each other, despite the great distance that separates them and despite Achil’s dramatic destiny. He is taken prisoner and sent to an infernal Gulag where he undergoes a terrible experiment of psychic manipulation. Unespectedly Achil’s and Niza’s destinies meet in Bucarest, a city which has nothing in common with the West, changed completely by the reigning sovietization.
