Memory is a recurring element in the planning of our future. We cannot plan the future without considering the past. Building,fulfilling an idea means having a lot of recollections, man’s memory,the memory of history,the memory of the environment. This memory is not a passive reproduction of our past. If one wants to make plans for the future, to do something that can leave a mark, he has to reinterpret the past according to the needs of the present. The dream of the Rotariano is to do something new; miracles are possible, because they go thought the flowing of the time and the recollection of things. “Nova erigere, vetera servare”. If mankind confronts itself with history, it finds different ways to define its relation with the past. It can wipe it out, by building its new image on the ruins of the past, it can keep it like something separate from present, it can reuse it to legitimate its progress with the power of memory. Very often the marks of human history remain indelible and impressed in the memory of the Earth. If we look back, it is easy to reach the conclusion that a great part of our own and other people’s lives is doomed to be forgotten and to leave no mark. To the fear of anihilation one can react in two ways. One can maintain that memory is impossible or useless and chooses, consciously,not to leave any mark of one’s life with the intenion of building only things that are destined to decay. On the contrary one can ncrease the heap of recollations exaggeratedly and preserve even the trivial things of every day life which have no historical dignity. If one doubts whether omething is so important as to become unforgettable,one chooses to leave the precious experiences of an intelligent past to the future. Without memory life is not life. Our memory is our coherence,our reason,our feelings,even our acting. Without memory we are nothing.
